V5C (document) - Is otherwise known as the registration document, the V5C shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle, the document is not proof of ownership! However this is one of the most important documents when buying or selling a car for clarification of responsibility.
If you have lost your V5C logbook it is not a major problem, however we do have some extremely important information that could save you problems later.
It is extremely important that you notify the DVLA in writing or online that you have sold your vehicle to us or our agent, details of which will be on your receipt.
Subject to our traffic light assessment (TLA) system, if your vehicle is destroyed we inform DVLA by electronic means that your vehicle is ready to be de-registered.
If you have not notified DVLA personally either in writing or online, then it's pretty fair to say that they could well take the decision to prosecute and fine you. You are required by law to notify DVLA that you have sold your vehicle, so please make sure you do this to avoid any unnecessary problems later. We also strongly advise recorded post.
If you are unsure of what to do then please email [email protected] or call us on the number at the top of this page.
