GOOD NEWS FOR BRITISH CAR MANUFACTURERS - 2011-01-21
Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) yesterday indicate that the production of cars, engines and commercial vehicles leaped forward last year, providing a much needed tonic for the British motor industry and manufacturing in general. Year on year figures demonstrated a 27.1 per cent rise in the number of cars built, with 1.27million rolling off the production lines and an even bigger rise, of 35.7 per cent, in the production of commercial vehicles.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of SMMT, was bullish about both the figures and future prospects, claiming “UK manufacturers exported more than a million vehicles last year, underlining the competitiveness and desirability of the current model line-up. We expect further growth across automotive manufacturing this year as the industry continues to invest in new models and a variety of low carbon technologies."
With a combined turnover of £40 billion and £1 billion per year invested in R and D, British car manufacturing looks to be going from strength to strength.
